In the mid-1460s or in early 1470s Andrea del Verrocchio made the bronze David for the Medici family, which is one of the most important artwork of his early career. In 1476 Lorenzo (1449–1492) and Giuliano de’ Medici (1453–1478) sold the bronze to the Florentine Signoria and the sculpture was placed in front of the entrance to the Sala dei Gigli. In the 18th century the bronze David was preserved in the Uffizi, in the second half of the 19th century being moved to the Bargello. The plaster cast copy of the David was purchased by the Museum in 1907, and the copy was installed in the Renaissance Hall in 1908. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
