Domenico Bertini commissioned Matteo Civitali in 1473 to make the marble altar of Santissima Sacramento for the Cathedral of Lucca. The altar included once the two adoring marble angels. Only these two figures were preserved from the altar until today. The plaster cast copy of the two angels were purchased by the Museum in 1907. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
