Pietro Mellini was a Florentine trader who ordered several artworks from Benedetto da Maiano. Among them was the well-known pulpit in the Santa Croce, Florence. Pietro Mellini's bust was probably based on a life mask. The marble bears the following inscriptions: BENEDICTVS MAIANVS FECIT and PETRI MELLINI.FRANCISCI FILII.IMAGO HEC.AN.1474. The plaster cast was purchased by the Museum in 1907 and installed in the Renaissance Hall in 1909. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
