Benedetto da Maiano made two large doors for the town hall (Palazzo Vecchio) of Florence in the 1470s. With his brother they designed the marble door frames of the Sala Grande and the Sala dell'Udienza. The statue of Saint John the Baptist holding a long, bronze cross in his hand decorated the top of the entrance of the Sala Grande. The plaster cast was purchased by the Museum in 1907. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
