The statue of Saint John the Baptist represents the typical features of the Rossellino workshop; it was made by Antonio Rossellino as one of his early works. Antonio Rossellino started his training at his brother, Bernardo's (1407/10–1464) workshop. He belongs to the generation of Desiderio da Settignano (1429/32–1464) and Mino da Fiesole (1429–1484), his style is much closer to theirs than to his brother's. The Museum purchased the plaster cast in 1907. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
