This typical bust of Christ was quite popular in Florence during the 16th century. The prototype was made by Verrocchio for the Orsanmichele: it was a group of life size sculptures made of bronze, representing Christ and Saint Thomas (now in the Museo Orsanmichele), on which the sculptor strated to work in 1466. The features of Christ’s face by Verrocchio were commonly applied by several other workshops, in which sculptures were commissioned for private devotional purposes. The typical, glazed terracotta bust of the Robbia family workshop was among these. The Museum purchased the plaster cast in 1907. Probably lost during World War II, the current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
