The glazed terracotta reliefs by Andrea della Robbia were highly praised at the end of the 15th century. From 1487 he made ten roundels depicting swaddled babies for the Florentine orphanage, called Ospedale degli Innocenti and designed and built by Brunelleschi between 1421 and 1424. Around 1490 he designed the glazed terracotta lunette representing the Annunciation, commissioned by Francesco del Pugliese also for the Ospedale degli Innocenti. The Museum purchased copies of four roundels from the series made for the Ospedale degli Innocenti and the plaster cast of the Annunciation in 1907, and the copies were exhibited in the Renaissance Hall from 1909. The copy was deposited between 1982 and 2013 in the Institute for the Blind, Budapest.
