Donatello’s composition was originally made for the Cavalcanti Chapel in the Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence. It was made from gray sandstone, the so-called pietra serena. It is on this work that the influences of the master’s sojourn in Rome are felt in full for the first time. All characters in the scene are “in motion” — the Virgin, who is holding a book, turns in wonderment towards Archangel Gabriel in response to his greeting.
