The Florentine sculptor and architect, Agostino di Duccio, mostly worked outside his native city, receiving commissions in Venice, Rimini, and Perugia. The marble relief depicting the Virgin and Child with five angels is one of the few surviving works from the artist’s time in Florence between 1463 and 1473. Originally placed in the Carmelite church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, the relief is now held by the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. The work well demonstrates Agostino’s unique artistic style, characterised by playful and decorative pleating, flatness, and linear forms.
