In the western choir of the Naumburg Cathedral, twelve life-size sculptures are representing the founders of the church, among them Herman (ca. 980–1038), Margrave of Meissen. These painted sandstone sculptures made in the middle of the thirteenth century are the most important works of the so-called Naumburg Master (supposedly educated in France), and they are highlights of European Gothic art, too. Commissioned by the museum in 1909, the cast was made by August Gerber in Cologne. It was exhibited in the Romanesque Hall in 1910. Probably lost during World War II, current whereabouts of the artwork are unknown.
